MGMT ?

MGMT is an American psychedelic rock band founded by Benjamin Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden. After the release of their first album, the members of their live band, Matthew Asti, James Richardson and Will Berman, joined the core band in the studio. Formed at Wesleyan University and originally with Cantora Records, they signed with Columbia Records and Red Ink in 2006.

On October 5, 2007, Spin.com named MGMT "Artist of the Day." On November 14, 2007, Rolling Stone pegged MGMT as a top ten "Artist to Watch" in 2008. The band was named ninth in the BBC's Sound of 2008 Top Ten Poll. They were also named as Last.fm's most played new artist of 2008 in their Best of 2008 lists.
MGMT's first album, Oracular Spectacular, debuted at #12 on the UK album chart, #13 after 34 weeks in the New Zealand RIANZ charts, number six on the Australian ARIA Charts, and hit number one on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. It has also been named the 18th best album of the decade by Rolling Stone magazine It was named the best album of 2008 by NME. MGMT also appeared prominently in Australia's Triple J Hottest 100 2008, coming in 2nd with "Electric Feel", 5th with "Kids" and 18th with "Time to Pretend". MGMT was nominated for the 2010 Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and their track "Kids" was nominated for Best Pop Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocals. These are the first Grammy nominations for the band. At the 2009 Grammy Awards, the Justice remix of "Electric Feel" won the Grammy for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. Their second album, Congratulations, was released on April 13, 2010. In January 2011 they began work on their third album, which will be called MGMT.

History

Formation (2002–2005)

Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden formed the band while attending Wesleyan University during their freshman year. "We weren't trying to start a band," remarked Goldwasser. "We were just hanging out and showing each other music that we liked." They experimented with noise rock and electronica before settling on what Paco Alvarez of Spin calls "their current brand of shape-shifting psychedelic pop." They graduated in 2005 and toured extensively in support of the Time to Pretend EP, opening for indie rock band Of Montreal.
The band first started with the name The Management, but since this name was already being used by another band, they later changed it to MGMT.

Oracular Spectacular (2006–2009)

In the autumn of 2006, Maureen Kenny signed the band to Columbia Records. When they got a phone call from the A&R department of Columbia Records saying they were interested in their music, they thought it was a joke. The duo recorded with Flaming Lips/Sleater-Kinney music producer Dave Fridmann in 2007 for their major label debut, Oracular Spectacular.^[21] MGMT opened for Of Montreal on tour in autumn 2007 as a five-piece touring band including Matthew Asti (bass), James Richardson (drums), and Hank Sullivant (guitar). In November 2007, they performed for the first time in Europe, supporting the band Samantha and The Courteeners at Koko in London, England. After March 2008, Hank Sullivant left the band to pursue his own band, Kuroma. Will Berman joined as the new drummer, James Richardson switched from drums to guitar, and Matthew Asti remained on bass.
The band supported Radiohead on the Manchester date of their world tour and went on a headline tour of the UK during November 2008, playing at venues such as Manchester Academy and Shepherd's Bush Empire.
MGMT opened for M.I.A. on the Vassar College date of her 2008 tour, and also played several shows with Beck while he toured in 2008. They appeared at the 2008 and 2009 editions of the Bonnaroo Music Festival. Bruce Springsteen was in attendance during their 2009 Bonnaroo late-night set, which followed his headlining appearance on What Stage. They also toured Australia with a headlining spot on the Meredith Music Festival line-up.
They also played a show at the Virgin Music Festival on the Toronto Islands on September 6, 2008, playing nine songs off their Oracular Spectacular album. They also played the 2008 Street Scene festival in San Diego, California. On February 27, 2009, MGMT performed alongside Spectrum at The Dome in Finsbury Park. MGMT also played another show in Australia at the 2009 Splendour in the Grass Festival. MGMT headlined this music festival along with other well known bands such as Bloc Party, The Flaming Lips, Happy Mondays, and Jane's Addiction.
MGMT opened for Paul McCartney, an admitted fan, at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, on August 5 and 6, 2009.
On August 15, 2009, MGMT played in Hamburg, Germany, at the Dockville Festival and performed several songs from their upcoming album.
MGMT was one of the headlining bands for the Treasure Island Music Festival on Treasure Island in San Francisco, California, on October 17, 2009.

Congratulations (2010–2011)

MGMT's Congratulations was released on April 13, 2010. The band, including Matthew Asti, James Richardson, and Will Berman from the live band, spent the summer of 2009 in Malibu, California, recording the album with Pete Kember (a.k.a. Sonic Boom) — formerly of Spacemen 3 and Spectrum — serving as producer/guru, and long-time friend, Billy Bennett, as engineer.

MGMT originally suggested that they might not release any singles from the album. By July 2010, however, four single releases from the album had been confirmed. The album cover art for Congratulations was created for MGMT by Anthony Ausgang and the overall design of the packaging is by Josh Cheuse of Sony Entertainment. On March 9, 2010, MGMT released the song "Flash Delirium" for free download on their official website. On March 20, the band allowed users to stream their new album from their website.
MGMT started their Congratulations Tour on April 12, 2010, in San Francisco, California, at The Fillmore. They performed on April 23 at Brown University's Spring Weekend; on April 27 at Yale University's Spring Fling; on April 30 at the University of New Hampshire's Spring Climax; and on May 1 at Fordham University's Spring Weekend.
They performed on Saturday Night Live on April 24, 2010, and on the Late Show With David Letterman on May 12 to promote their new album, and on June 11, MGMT played their largest headlining show anywhere in the world with a sold-out, 9,500 capacity gig at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado.^[29] On June 25, MGMT performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and on July 23, they were the musical guests on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
On August 25, MGMT released a music video for "Congratulations", the third video of their second album.^{[citation needed]} MGMT was one of the third tier bands for the 2010 Coachella Festival in Indio, California. The event draws nearly 120,000 attendees annually. On October 31, 2010, the band performed for the Voodoo Experience in New Orleans, Louisiana. The band decided to dress as the main characters from Scooby-Doo for Halloween; Andrew dressed up as Daphne and Ben dressed up as Velma. They headlined at Fun Fun Fun Fest which was held at Waterloo Park in Austin, Texas on November 6, 2010. The performance was the last show in the US for MGMT in 2010. Their first 2011 gig was at Mar del Plata, Argentina, in front of a crowd of more than 40,000 on the beach in a free event which they headlined.
MGMT began their first Asian tour on February 22, 2011.
On September 22, 2011 MGMT performed the Pink Floyd song "Lucifer Sam" during Late Night with Jimmy Fallon's "Pink Floyd Week".

MGMT (2012–present)

In January 2012 MGMT confirmed in an interview with Intercourse Magazine that they had started work on the album. VanWyngarden stated that he has written five songs. On February 27, MGMT began recording the album with Dave Fridmann in his Tarbox Road Studios.  In March 2012 Andrew said that they will perform new songs on their upcoming shows in Latin America.

Legal proceedings

In January 2009, MGMT demanded compensation from the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) Party, headed by the President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy. The song "Kids" was used on several occasions without permission (in 2008) at a party conference and in two online videos.
At first, a 1 euro compensation was offered to the band by the UMP, but MGMT refused that offer. Finally, in April 2009, an amicable settlement was decided and the UMP agreed to pay MGMT around 2,500 euros for legal fees and 30,000 euros for copyright piracy, which were donated to an organization that supports copyright law.

Collaborations

They have collaborated with the rapper Kid Cudi, and are featured on one track – "Pursuit of Happiness" from his album Man on the Moon: The End of Day. For the 2010 MTV VMA's Kid Cudi was nominated for Best Hip-Hop video for "Pursuit of Happiness" a track which features MGMT and Ratatat. They also collaborated on the track "Worm Mountain" on The Flaming Lips' Embryonic.
On September 4, 2009, Beck announced his second Record Club covers album, Songs of Leonard Cohen. MGMT contributed, alongside Devendra Banhart, Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother and Binki Shapiro of Little Joy. Andrew VanWyngarden chose the album.

The story:

On 9 November 1966 at dawn (presumably around 5AM), McCartney had angrily driven off in his car after an argument during a recording session. Whilst on the way he picked up a fan, Rita, who needed a ride home. Then, he crashed the car, cracked his head open and died as a result. To spare the public from grief, the Beatles replaced him with ‘William Campbell’ or 'Billy Shears', the winner of a McCartney look-alike contest a few years before the accident. It was said that their record label made them to do so in order to keep their careers alive as living legend The Beatles. Due to guilt to lying to their fans about Paul's death, John, George and Ringo (and probably a few close friends who knew about the death) left clues on their album covers, lyrics, music videos, movies, simply everywhere! So we, the fans, would come play the game and figure it out eventually that Paul McCartney is actually really dead.

The first clues:

The famous Abbey Road cover has been said is the ultimate proof of the bizzare theory of the time - that Paul McCartney was in fact dead. Since the Abbey Road cover was said to hid clues to the untold story of the Beatles, it has become one of the most iconic covers in history, spawning such conspiracy theories still being talked for decades.

1. THE FUNERAL

The procession of The Beatles across the zebra crossing, say the conspiracy theorists, represents Paul's funeral.

John Lennon leads in a white suit and symbolises the preacher; Ringo Starr is the mourner or possibly the undertaker, dressed in black; George Harrison, in scruffy shirt and trousers, denotes the grave-digger; Paul is wearing an old suit and is the only one who is barefoot, walking on a hot tarmac. This, they argued, was a sign that Paul was the corpse.

2. THE CIGARETTE

Paul McCartney is left-handed, but here holds his cigarette in his right hand. At the time, cigarettes were commonly referred to as 'coffin nails'. This, therefore, could be seen as a message that Paul's 'coffin lid' had been nailed down and that the man in the picture was a lookalike.

Paul is also out of step with the other band members. Each of the others has his left leg forward, but Paul has his right leg forward - again marking him out as different.

3. THE REGISTRATION PLATE

The white VW Beetle in the background has the registration LMW 28IF - 28 being the age conspiracy theorists say Paul would have been IF he hadn't 'died'. It has also been suggested that the LMW stands for 'Linda McCartney Weeps' - referring to his new wife whom he had married earlier that year.

4. THE SPECTATORS

In the background, a small group of people dressed in white stand on one side of the road, while a lone person stands on the other.

Is this meant to be Paul, alone and different from the others?

5. THE POLICE VAN

On the right-hand side of the road is a black police van, believed to be a reference to the police who kept quiet about Paul's 'death'.

According to legend, the band's manager, Brian Epstein, bought their silence, and the presence of the Maria is meant as another subtle thank you.

6. THE LINE OF CARS

A line can be traced from the VW Beetle to the three cars in front of it. If it is drawn connecting their right wheels it runs straight through Paul's head, with theorists suggesting that means Paul sustained a head injury because of a car crash.

7. THE BLOODSTAIN

On the Australian version of the album, the cover showed what could be a bloodstain splattered on the road just behind Ringo and John, supposedly backing claims of a road accident.

One and only Tupac Amaru Shakur

Tupac Amaru Shakur (June 16, 1971 – September 13, 1996), known by his stage names 2Pac, Pac, and Makaveli, was an American rapper and actor. Shakur has sold over 75 million albums worldwide as of 2007,^[2] making him one of the best-selling music artists in the world. Rolling Stone Magazine named him the 86th Greatest Artist of All Time.^[3] Shakur was also an actor.^[4] The themes of most of Tupac's songs are the violence and hardship in inner cities, racism, social problems, and conflicts with other rappers during the East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry. Shakur began his career as a roadie, backup dancer, and MC for the alternative hip hop group Digital Underground.^[5][6][7]
Afeni Shakur and Assata Shakur, his mother and aunt respectively, were involved with the Black Panthers, and Tupac made reference to the organization in the song Changes. Shakur was involved in a West-coast East-coast rivalry after a major feud with East-coast rappers, producers and record-label members of staff.^[8]
On September 7, 1996, Shakur was shot four times in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was taken to the University Medical Center, where he died six days later of respiratory failure and cardiac arrest.^[9]

Tupac Amaru Shakur was born on the East Harlem section of Manhattan in New York City.^[10] He was named after Túpac Amaru II,^[11] a Peruvian revolutionary who led an indigenous uprising against Spain and was subsequently executed.^[12]
His mother, Afeni Shakur, and his father, Billy Garland, were active members of the Black Panther Party in New York in the late 1960s and early 1970s; he was born just one month after his mother's acquittal on more than 150 charges of "Conspiracy against the United States government and New York landmarks" in the New York Panther 21 court case.^[13]
Although unconfirmed by the Shakur family, several sources (including the official coroner's report) list his birth name as Lesane Parish Crooks.^[1] This name was supposedly entered on the birth certificate because Afeni feared her enemies would attack her son, and disguised his true identity using a different last name. She changed it later, following her separation from Garland and marriage to Mutulu Shakur.^[14]
Struggle and incarceration surrounded Shakur from an early age. His godfather, Elmer "Geronimo" Pratt, a high ranking Black Panther, was convicted of murdering a school teacher during a 1968 robbery, although his sentence was later overturned. His stepfather, Mutulu, spent four years at large on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list beginning in 1982. Mutulu was wanted in part for having helped his sister Assata Shakur (also known as Joanne Chesimard) to escape from a penitentiary in New Jersey, where she had been incarcerated for shooting a state trooper to death in 1973. Mutulu was caught in 1986 and imprisoned for the robbery of a Brinks armored truck in which two police officers and a guard were killed.^[15] Shakur had a half-sister, Sekyiwa, two years his junior, and an older stepbrother, Mopreme "Komani" Shakur, who appeared on many of his recordings.^[16]

At the age of twelve, Shakur enrolled in Harlem's 127th Street Repertory Ensemble and was cast as the Travis Younger character in the play A Raisin in the Sun, which was performed at the Apollo Theater. In 1986, the family relocated to Baltimore, Maryland.^[17] After completing his second year at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School he transferred to the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he studied acting, poetry, jazz, and ballet. He performed in Shakespeare plays, and in the role of the Mouse King in The Nutcracker.^[15] Shakur, accompanied by one of his friends, Dana "Mouse" Smith, as his beatbox, won most of the many rap competitions that he participated in and was considered to be the best rapper in his school.^[18] He was remembered as one of the most popular kids in his school because of his sense of humor, superior rapping skills, and ability to mix in with all crowds.^[19] He developed a close friendship with a young Jada Pinkett (later Jada Pinkett Smith) that lasted until his death. In the documentary Tupac: Resurrection, Shakur says, "Jada is my heart. She will be my friend for my whole life," and Pinkett Smith calls him "one of my best friends. He was like a brother. It was beyond friendship for us. The type of relationship we had, you only get that once in a lifetime." A poem written by Shakur titled "Jada" appears in his book, The Rose That Grew From Concrete, which also includes a poem dedicated to Pinkett Smith called "The Tears in Cupid's Eyes". During his time in art school, Shakur began dating the daughter of the director of the Baltimore Communist Party USA.^[20]
In June 1988, Shakur and his family moved to Marin City, California, a community of mainly housing projects located 5 miles (8.0 km) north of San Francisco,^[17] where he attended Tamalpais High School in nearby Mill Valley.^[21] He began attending the poetry classes of Leila Steinberg in 1989.^[22] That same year, Steinberg organized a concert with a former group of Shakur's, Strictly Dope; the concert led to him being signed with Atron Gregory who set him up as a roadie and backup dancer with the young rap group Digital Underground in 1990.

Shakur's professional entertainment career began in the early 1990s, when he debuted his rapping skills in a vocal turn in Digital Underground's "Same Song" from the soundtrack to the 1991 film Nothing but Trouble and also appeared with the group in the film of the same name. The song was later released as the lead song of the Digital Underground EP This is an EP Release, the follow-up to their debut hit album Sex Packets. Shakur appeared in the accompanying music video. After his rap debut, he performed with Digital Underground again on the album Sons of the P. Later, he released his first solo album, 2Pacalypse Now.

Me Against The World Album

2Pacalypse Now did not do as well on the charts as future albums, spawning no top ten hits. His second record, Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z., was released in 1993. The album did better than the previous one debuting on number 24 on the Billboard 200. However, the real commercial success of Tupac Shakur began with his third album titled Me Against the World which debuted on top of the Billboard 200 and sold two million copies. His following album, All Eyez on Me, was Tupac's biggest commercial success. The album debuted at number 1 and has sold 9 million copies till date and is considered among the best rap albums of all time. The rest of the six albums of Tupac were released after his death. Four of these albums have been certified multi-platinum and three of them topped the Billboard 200 while all of these topped the US R&B charts. Tupac's greatest hit album has sold over 10 million copies in US and is certified Diamond by the RIAA.

Shakur's music and philosophy is rooted in many American, African-American, and World entities, including the Black Panther Party, Black nationalism, egalitarianism, and liberty. His debut album, 2Pacalypse Now, revealed the socially conscious side of Shakur. On this album, Shakur attacked social injustice, poverty and police brutality on songs "Brenda's Got a Baby", "Trapped" and "Part Time Mutha". His style on this album was highly influenced by the social consciousness and Afrocentrism pervading hip hop in the late 1980s and early 1990s. On this initial release, Shakur helped extend the success of such rap groups as Boogie Down Productions, Public Enemy, X-Clan, and Grandmaster Flash, as he became one of the first major socially conscious rappers from the West Coast.^[24]
On his second record, Shakur continued to rap about the social ills facing African-Americans, with songs like "The Streetz R Deathrow" and "Last Wordz". He also showed his compassionate side with the anthem "Keep Ya Head Up", while simultaneously putting his legendary aggressiveness on display with the title track from the album Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. he added a salute to his former group Digital Underground by including them on the playful track "I Get Around". Throughout his career, an increasingly aggressive attitude can be seen pervading Shakur's subsequent albums.^[25]
The contradictory themes of social inequality and injustice, unbridled aggression, compassion, playfulness, and hope all continued to shape Shakur's work, as witnessed with the release of his incendiary 1995 album Me Against the World. In 1996, Shakur released All Eyez on Me. Many of these tracks are considered by many critics to be classics, including "Ambitionz Az a Ridah", "I Ain't Mad at Cha", "California Love", "Life Goes On" and "Picture Me Rollin'".; All Eyez on Me was a change of style from his earlier works. While still containing socially conscious songs and themes, Shakur's album was heavily influenced by party tracks and tended to have a more "feel good" vibe than his first albums. Shakur described it as a celebration of life, and the record was critically and commercially successful.^[26]
He had enjoyed and had been influenced by the work of contemporary English and Irish pop musicians as a teenager such as Kate Bush, Culture Club, Sinéad O'Connor and U2

Shakur was a voracious reader. He was inspired by a wide variety of writers, including William Shakespeare, Niccolò Machiavelli, Donald Goines, Sun Tzu, Kurt Vonnegut, Mikhail Bakunin, Maya Angelou, Alice Walker, and Khalil Gibran. In his book Holler If You Hear Me: Searching for Tupac Shakur, University of Pennsylvania Avalon Professor of Humanities and African American Studies Michael Eric Dyson describes the experience of visiting the home of Shakur's friend and promoter Leila Steinberg to find "the sea of books" once owned by Shakur.

Lovely Agyness Deyn

Deyn is from Littleborough in Lancashire.^[7] Deyn later moved to Failsworth in Oldham.^[8][9] The daughter of a nurse, Lorraine, and second of three children she moved to Rossendale, Lancashire, and attended All Saints RC High School, as well as Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School and Sixth Form in Waterfoot, Rossendale.
Deyn's name was apparently coined to further her modelling career after she consulted her mother's friend, a numerology expert who advised her of the most 'fortuitous' way to spell the name 'Agnes'.^[10] It was reported that her mother Lorraine and sister Emily have both changed their surname to Deyn, while Lorraine has changed the I in her first name to Y.^[11]
Deyn's working life started serving part-time aged 13, at a fish and chip shop in Hull. Even at an early age she had an eye for style and by 17 she had already had her head shaved. "I’ve had short hair since I was 13, and when I was 17, I had a skinhead."^[12] In 1999, she won the Rossendale Free Press "Face of '99" competition, aged just 16.^[13] She then moved to London, working in a fast-food restaurant during the day and a bar at night but admits: "It didn’t quite work."^[14] During this time she says she was also at college in Hull, studying drama and music

Career

Modelling

Deyn's biography states that she was spotted while shopping with fashion designer Henry Holland in Kentish Town, London.^[15] She then signed with SELECT model management.
In May 2007, she was featured on the cover of American Vogue, alongside Doutzen Kroes, Caroline Trentini, Raquel Zimmermann, Sasha Pivovarova, Jessica Stam, Coco Rocha, Hilary Rhoda, Chanel Iman, and Lily Donaldson as the new crop of supermodels.^[16] She has also been featured on the covers of: UK Vogue, the Observer Woman supplement, The Sunday Times Style, Pop, Grazia, Time, Style & Life, Vogue Italia, and numerous other international publications.^[17]

As for professional endorsements Deyn has appeared in advertisements for Anna Sui, Blugirl by Blumarine, Burberry, Cacharel, Doc Martens, Gianfranco Ferré, Moussy, Maison Gilfy, Shiseido, Shiatzy Chen, Giorgio Armani, Mulberry, Paul Smith, Reebok and Vivienne Westwood. While garnering such prestigious contracts she is currently the face of the new fragrance The Beat by Burberry, Gold by Giles Deacon at New Look replacing Drew Barrymore, Jean Paul Gaultier's fragrance Ma Dame, Shiseido (replacing Angelina Jolie), and childhood friend Henry Holland's label House of Holland. In 2009, Deyn landed the new Uniqlo campaign and appeared in a commercial with Gabriel Aubry.
In May 2008, Deyn was guest editor of i-D magazine. The issue was devoted to her and includes articles written by and about Deyn, as well interviews she conducted with fashion insiders such as Vivienne Westwood. Deyn was one of the faces to land in one of the fourteen covers of V magazine fall issue. Each cover boasts a head shot of a famous model, either from the new crop of leading models or the supermodel era; it was lensed by duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.^[18]
In June 2009, the Daily Mirror reported that Deyn had quit modelling to spend more time with her boyfriend. The newspaper quoted a source as saying that modelling had started to bore Deyn and that she had hired an acting agent to pursue an acting career in British independent films.^[19]
Vogue Paris declared her one of the top 30 models of the 2000s.^[20]
Deyn is known for being something of a chameleon and constantly changing her looks. Her hair has been blonde, red, brown and black during her modelling career. Although usually she sports a boyish cut more recently she has been seen with a bob and a bowl cut. In April 2010 she caused headlines when she arrived at the Coachella Music Festival with her head shaved to a "skinhead" style similar to that of Sinead O'Connor in the early 90s.
Deyn has recently collaborated with her younger sister Emily to create a line of T-shirts and tank tops for high street chain Uniqlo.^[21]
Deyn appeared in the May 2011 British Vogue editorial, photographed by Tim Walker.^[22]

Music

Deyn provides vocals for the single "Who" by Five O'Clock Heroes as well as featuring in the video. The single was poorly received by NME, who gave it only a 2/10.^[23] The single charted at #109 in the UK.^[24] Until recently she was a member of the now defunct group Lucky Knitwear.^[1] Deyn's voice can be heard at the beginning of Rihanna's music video for "We Found Love".

In March 2011, Deyn appeared as an owl-bearing warrior in Woodkid's debut music video, "Iron".^[25]
In 2011, Agyness Deyn has been cast in a remake of Nicolas Winding Refn's 1996 cult classic, Pusher, where she plays a strong minded stripper.
On 28 February 2012, Deyn played her first rôle on the West End stage, as Paula in François Archambault's comedy, The Leisure Society.^[26]

STARF**KER

Starfucker, also known as STRFKR, is an electronica band from Portland, Oregon formed in 2007, initially started as a solo project for Joshua Hodges.
Members include Joshua Hodges (vocals, keyboards, guitar, drums), Shawn Glassford (bass, keyboards, drums), and Keil Corcoran (drums, keyboards, vocals). Hodges describes the band's music as "dance music that you can actually listen to, that's good pop songs, but also you can dance to it."
Prior to forming Starfucker, Hodges released a solo album titled Sexton Blake and followed up with an album released under the band name "Sexton Blake" entitled "Plays The Hits!. Both albums were released on Expunged Records. Ryan Bjornstad also played with Hodges in Sexton Blake, along with Ryan Dobrowski (now in Blind Pilot).
Starfucker's song, "Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second" (2008) was used in Target's "Pink Pepto" commercial in 2009^[1] created by the Portland ad agency Wieden+Kennedy and as selected as the AdWeek's "Ad of the Day" on September 4, 2009.^[2]

In the fall of 2009, they changed their name to "PYRAMID"^[3] then "Pyramiddd"^[4][5], finally reverting to Starfucker in April 2010, although they may use the name STRFKR when touring.^[6]
The band members will, in many cases, during performances, wear women's clothing; this is done mostly by bass player Shawn Glassford, but sometimes done by the other members as well. This can also be seen in their music video for the song "German Love," directed by Rebecca Micciche. Although seemingly insignificant, this is one of the small issues that Starfucker is often scrutinized over. Along those same lines, Hodges says that they chose the name "Starfucker" just based on the curiosity of how far they could get "with a stupid name like that."
In late summer 2010 Starfucker announced they would be signing with Polyvinyl Records, releasing a two song EP, with a full album in preparation for March 2011.
In several of their song intros or endings ("Florida," "Isabella of Castile," "Medicine," "Pistol Pete," "Mystery Cloud," "Hungry Ghost," "Quality Time") are samples from lectures by Alan Watts.
Their song "Bury Us Alive" was featured in the 2012 film Chronicle
On August 2nd, 2011, the band announced over Facebook that Ryan Biornstad would be leaving the band to pursue a solo career.

Dylan Rieder became immediately recognized in the skating world due to his smooth style, unique persona and ability to skate any type of spot, with his breakout part coming in Transworld’s “A Time to Shine.” With a sponsors list containing Alien Workshop, Gravis, Spitfire, Thunder, Analog, MOB, Jack’s Garage, Swiss and Roughneck Hardware, it’s evident that Rieder is as in-demand as any skater out there. Recently, Hypebeast had an opportunity to bounce some questions off the pro, with topics ranging from his involvement with Gravis to his evolution with the sport he’s been a part of for so long.
How would you describe your personal style?
It’s pretty black and white, if you know what I mean….
What’s your approach to designing shoes? Do you take the same approach with clothing?
Well, first you have to start with tying your shoelaces. Double loops then cris crossing you know? I mean, it starts with an idea, then that goes into motion, then into a mold, then into a sample, and after that you’ll have a tangible product. Then go from there.

How would you describe being fashionable?
Ha! Fuck, your asking the wrong person. What does fashionable even mean. I’d love to see that description in the dictionary.
How has Gravis grown since you first started with the brand
Since four years ago or however long it’s been Gravis , I feel the brand has made its imprint on the skateboarding world, which I don’t think it ever had before. These days, it’s hard for a company outside of skateboarding to make their way into being accepted into the skateboarding world. And now, Gravis has grown into this skate shoe company that people enjoy and want to be apart of.
What things did you take away from growing up in Westminster/HB?
I took myself away and moved to Los Angeles. That was a start. I love Westminster, that’s my home. I miss the pool halls and being five minutes away from the beach.
What do you feel constitutes good music?
A song that makes you relate to a feeling or familiarity. A band that distracts you while your sitting in a tour van for 10 hours. A lyric that you can listen to over and over and not get sick of it. Anything but drum and bass!
What are your favorite 5 meals and why?

You travel a lot. What do you get from seeing all these different places?
I feel really fortunate to be able to see the places I’ve been and encountered. Every destination is a new experience, and most of the time I’m traveling with my good friends, so being in foreign places with them running a muck and skating is quite a lovely time. Sometimes it’s tiring, after being on the road for two or more weeks you can get tour fever, but that’s when delirium kicks in and things get interesting.

What has skateboarding become to you now that you’ve been doing it for so long?
It’s still fun, I enjoy it. It’s my life, you know. There’s a bit more work ethic to it now, which can take away from the origin of why I started skateboarding in the first place a little bit, but then again I wouldn’t have what I have now if it wasn’t more of a job than a hobby.. I can’t complain.
Being such a traveler, what makes “home” feel like “home”?
My bed, all the local watering holes, some Aussie gypsying on the couch, being able to lock yourself in the comfort of your house for a day with no communication, grass on the lawn, listening to records, Red O margis. The usual.

Dear John (A very Good Movie)

Dear John is a 2010 American romantic drama-war film starring Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum. It was released theatrically in North America on February 5, 2010. The film was directed by Lasse Hallström, and it is an adaptation of Nicholas Sparks's novel of the same name. It follows the life of a soldier (Channing Tatum) after he falls in love with a young woman (Amanda Seyfried). They decide to exchange letters to each other after he is deployed to the war. The movie was filmed in 2009 in Charleston, South Carolina.

John Tyree (Channing Tatum), a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army Special Forces is lying on the ground in combat gear with multiple gunshot wounds to his body. Coins begin to fall over him as, in a voiceover, he recalls a childhood trip to the U.S. Mint. He compares himself to a coin in the United States Military, and states that the last thing he thought about before he blacked out was "you".
The story then flashes back to a beach, where John is on leave in Wilmington, North Carolina, and he meets Savannah Lynn Curtis (Amanda Seyfried), a college student on spring break. Over the course of two weeks, Savannah and John fall in love. John meets Savannah's family, her neighbor, Tim Wheddon (Henry Thomas), and Tim's son Alan (Luke Benward) who has autism.

Savannah meets John's father (Richard Jenkins), a reclusive man who seems to be obsessed with his coin collection (specifically mules), but his genuine interest draws her, to John's surprise. Savannah mentions to John that his father, like Alan, may have autism. This upsets John, who gets into a fight with Savannah's neighbor, Randy (Scott Porter) and, in the process, accidentally punches Tim. John apologizes to Tim, leaves Savannah a note, and then they spend one last day together, parting with, "I'll see you soon, then," rather than goodbye.
John and Savannah continue their relationship through letters, expecting to build a life together when he leaves the army. But the September 11 attacks make him reconsider, and he ultimately chooses to re-enlist. Over the next two years, the romance goes on, through their letters. After a time, John finds himself anxiously awaiting the next letter, but when it arrives it is a Dear John letter, informing him that she has become engaged to someone else. John is so deeply depressed by the news that he burns all of Savannah's letters.

Despite being wounded and encouraged to return home, John re-enlists. After four more years and many missions, while waiting to receive orders on his unit's next deployment, John is informed that his father had a stroke. When John arrives at the hospital he learns that his father is still alive but in grave condition. Feeling guilty, he asks the doctor if the outcome would have been different if he had been there earlier but the doctor says no. John writes a letter to his father, which he reads to him at the hospital; John's voiceover at the beginning of the film was from this letter, in which he told his father that the first thing to cross his mind after he was shot was coins, and the last thing to cross his mind before he lost consciousness was his dad, ultimately the most important person in his life. Shortly thereafter, his father dies.
John goes to visit Savannah and is shocked to find that she has married Tim and is living with him and his son, Alan. He learns that she had to abandon her dream of a riding camp for kids with autism because of Tim's fight against lymphoma, and John goes with her to visit him in the hospital. Tim tells John that Savannah still loves him. That night, John asks Savannah why she did not even call him and she says it was because just hearing his voice would make her change her mind. She asks John to say "I'll see you soon" like they always do, but instead, he just says goodbye. He makes a decision to sell all of his father's coin collection except the mule that John found, to raise money which could help Tim in his treatment. Months later John receives a letter from Savannah telling him that Tim died after two months and "I'll see you soon, then." The film then skips forward to show John as a civilian with facial hair, carrying his bike, as he sees Savannah in a coffee shop. They make eye-contact and the last scene ends with the both of them hugging.
